The Damon technique is the backbone of our practice. Damon braces are precise in design but unforgiving in execution. Implemented correctly, they deliver the best smiles in our hands. Damon braces are friction-free, allowing the forces of the wire to be accurately delivered to move teeth into their proper positions. Damon braces do not use coloured rings to hold them, avoiding buildup of bacteria on the tooth surface. For more information, see www.damonbraces.com
These are inserted before braces to change the shape of the jaws. We use Twin Blocks to prepare the mouth for braces while some baby teeth are still present. Twin Blocks work by using muscle forces and chewing function to change the positions of the bone and teeth (www.twinblocks.com). They can produce dramatic changes in growing children, in many cases it prevents the need for jaw surgery later.
Other types of removable plates are used in younger children to correct minor teeth problems such as cross-bites which can prevent proper jaw development and create gum disease. Patients with underbite will also benefit from early intervention using removable plates.
With new technology, orthodontists can now use bones surrounding the teeth as anchor to correct the bite. This is achieved by inserting mini-implants. they are tiny screws inserted under local anaesthetic. When used correctly, mini-implants eliminate the need to extract teeth or surgery to correct the jaws. In our practice, gaps created by missing teeth are routinely closed using mini-implants as anchors. With open bites between the front teeth, mini-implants in the palate are effective for closing them down.
