Twin Blocks are simple plates worn 24 hours a day. It has 2 components, an upper and a lower plate which work togeter to posture the lower jaw forward.

The upper plate often has an expansion screw to widen the upper arch. By biting the blocks together; the muscles, bone and teeth are encouraged to adapt into an improed position, helping to correct teeth and jaw discrepancies.

When inserting the plates into your mouth, first position them on your teeth and then firmly press the appliance into place using your thumbs. Never position them with your tongue or bite into place.

When removing the plates, ease the appliance off from each side. Do not flip the appliance off your teeth with your tongue as this will result in breakages.

The plates must be worn together to be effective!

Twin Block Instructions

  1. The Twin Block Appliance consists of upper and lower removable plates that work together to encourage the forward growth of the lower jaw and improve overjet. It is essential to wear the Twin Block 24 hours a day, including during meals, for it to be effective. Failure to do so will result in compromised results and extended treatment time.
  2. Please follow the instructions below: 1. Remove your Twin Block to clean it when you brush your teeth. You can gently clean the appliance with your toothbrush and toothpaste. Holding the plate in the palm of your hand while cleaning will help avoid breaking it. **Do not use very hot or boiling water to clean your Twin Block**, as this will distort the plastic, and the plates will no longer fit.
  3. When chewing food, you may need to cut it into small pieces and place it between the lower side teeth and the plastic that covers the upper side teeth to grind it. Ensure that your lower jaw is positioned forward to maximize contact for chewing. The ramps will guide you into this forward position.
  4. Initially, you may need to start with softer foods, such as rice, pasta, and sandwiches. However, within a few days, most people can eat a regular diet. Avoid chewy foods like Minties, chewing gum, and other sticky candies, as they can damage the appliance and contribute to tooth decay.
  5. To remove the plates from your mouth, use one finger from each hand to lift them out. Avoid biting them into place when reinserting them; instead, use your fingers to ensure they’re positioned correctly.
  6. Remove the Twin Block if you are playing contact sports that require a mouthguard or during water sports. Always keep it in the provided case to prevent loss or damage.
  7. Keep your plates away from pets, as they are attracted to their smell and may eat them.
  8. Speak as much as you can when you first get your Twin Block fitted. Because the appliance covers the roof of your mouth, your speech may be affected. The more you talk while wearing it, the quicker your speech will return to normal. Reading aloud is a helpful way to speed this process.
  9. Don’t worry about excess saliva when you first start using the appliance; your body is producing saliva to help you swallow. This will be reduced after a few days.
  10. Call us if you develop any sore spots which may occur in the first few days. If you notice that the plate is causing a red spot or ulcer, try to keep wearing it until you can see us, so we can clearly identify where adjustments are needed.
  11. Avoid getting into the habit of flicking your appliances in and out with your tongue, as this can loosen the plates, break metal wires, and incur repair charges. 11. If you lose or damage your Twin Block, please contact the practice as soon as possible.

How to turn the expansion screw

When instructed, turn the expansion screw in the direction of the yellow arrow until your Orthodontist advises you to stop turning.
